Commemorate, remember and experience Jewish history
A quiet place tells of religious life, new beginnings and remembrance: The tour through the Meeting Place Old Jewish Prayer Room in Gelsenkirchen opens an authentic space of Jewish post-war history. The theme Remember, Recall! invites one to consciously perceive history and discover the significance of vibrant memory in a respectful atmosphere.
An authentic place of the Jewish community
For almost 50 years, the small prayer room on Von-der-Recke-Straße was the center of religious life for the Jewish community in Gelsenkirchen. The former prayer room, consecrated in 1958, still preserves important traces of Jewish community history. After the re-establishment of the Jewish community in 1946, it became a visible symbol of Jewish life in the city.
Exhibition, Torah scroll and stained glass windows
A small exhibition provides insights into the history of Jews in Gelsenkirchen and central aspects of Jewish religion. Among the special exhibits are an old Torah scroll of the community as well as pieces from the Jewish Museum Dorsten. In the prayer room, historical stained glass windows depict Jewish holidays in a style typical of the 1950s.
Experience of faith between remembrance and encounter
The tour combines historical information with religious and cultural education. The atmosphere of the preserved prayer room offers space for reflection, questions, and a conscious engagement with Jewish spirituality, community tradition, and culture of remembrance. Visitors experience a place where history is not only explained but is made immediately tangible in architecture, objects, and symbols.
Participation and registration
The tour begins on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 5:00 PM. Participation is free of charge; a donation for children's and youth work is welcome. Registration at the city and tourism info is required. The tour takes place with a minimum of three and a maximum of 30 people.
The meeting place is a place of learning, remembrance, and respectful encounters. Those who want to understand Jewish life in Gelsenkirchen up close and experience an authentic memorial site will find a valuable access to history, religion, and community in this tour.
