Private message before the season finale
Schalke goalkeeper Karius becomes a father – that's why he's missing in Nuremberg
Loris Karius missed FC Schalke 04's 0:3 at the Max-Morlock-Stadion in Nuremberg for personal reasons: the goalkeeper has become the father of a son. The club communicated the occasion openly – and coach Miron Muslic used the opportunity to provide early sporting clarity as well: Karius is expected to return as number one for the home game against Eintracht Braunschweig.
Birth instead of away game: Schalke explains Karius’ absence
The 32-year-old was not in the squad in Nuremberg, and this was explicitly not a sporting decision. Schalke openly shared the reason and wrote of “some good news from Italy” – “Leonardo is here.” Karius and his partner Diletta Leotta have become parents of a son.
The club also published a family photo, which had already been shared by Leotta on Instagram. In this way, Schalke immediately removed any room for speculation: Karius’ absence was explained in an understandable way, instead of automatically prompting sporting interpretations due to a missing regular player.
Muslic’s approach: Time for the family, no artificial deadline
Coach Miron Muslic put the personal occasion in the foreground after the match. “These are wonderful news for all of us, especially for Loris and his family. We were in contact already yesterday morning,” said the coach.
Muslic also made it clear that the club is not overloading the moment tactically or tying it to expectations: “We are not under any stress and there is no time frame for Loris and his family.” Especially in a phase of the season when the club is under increased scrutiny after promotion, this message is also important internally: The club signals support instead of turning a private exceptional situation into a performance discussion.
Clear goalkeeper hierarchy: Return as number one announced
Despite the sporting setback in Nuremberg, the planning for the goalkeeper position remained clear. Muslic announced: “Loris will return to Gelsenkirchen in the middle of the week and will then play as number one in the home game against Braunschweig.”
With this, Schalke sends a second signal: The short-term absence does not change the distribution of roles. In teams where the goalkeeper question is open, absences quickly become the starting point for debates – Schalke closed this discussion early and directly linked the personal news with a sporting perspective.
In the end, after the 0:3 in Nuremberg, the goalkeeper question was less in focus than a special private moment. And in sporting terms, the course is clear: Karius is to be the first choice again against Braunschweig.
