BLB NRW, Conference Hotel Lichthof | Directions & Parking
The BLB NRW Lichthof in Gelsenkirchen is much more than an ordinary conference hotel: The building combines the history of the Rheinelbe colliery with a clear focus on training, is located near the city center, and today offers spaces for seminars, workshops, multi-day events, and overnight stays. The location has been a fixed address for public administration and other institutions for years, but is also interesting for guests looking for industrial architecture, a quiet working atmosphere, and practical organization in one place. With the historic courtyard, 53 rooms, ten conference rooms, and free Wi-Fi, the Lichthof is designed for focused work without losing the charm of the former colliery building. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
Directions, Parking, and Public Transport to the Lichthof
When searching for the Lichthof, directions and parking are often the first topics, and this is where the official BLB NRW website provides the most important information. The conference hotel is located at Leithestraße 37 in 45886 Gelsenkirchen; for navigation devices, Virchowstraße 102 is also mentioned. It is also important to note that the building is located in an environmental zone. Therefore, those arriving by car should keep an eye on both the route and the environmental zone regulations. The official description makes it clear that the location is easily accessible, but does not function like a classic trade fair hotel with a large parking area. This mix makes prior planning sensible: The Lichthof is central enough for short distances, but is also a historic building complex with limited surrounding space. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/fileadmin/Home/Service/Lichthof/Dokumente/hausbroschuere-lichthof-blb-nrw.pdf))
Using public transport, getting to the Lichthof is straightforward. The BLB NRW guidelines mention bus line 389 from Gelsenkirchen main station to the Virchowstraße stop; from there, it is just a short walk. Additionally, the service page describes a walking route of about 15 minutes from the main station via Bochumer Straße and the Science Park. This makes the Lichthof particularly suitable for guests arriving by train and bus who wish to walk the last part. For conference participants coming from the Ruhr area or traveling without their own car, this is a real advantage. The location is not only functional but also pleasant in everyday life: The route leads through an urban area with clear waypoints, making it easy to remember the journey. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/fileadmin/Home/Service/Lichthof/Dokumente/hausbroschuere-lichthof-blb-nrw.pdf))
When parking, one should pay attention to two different official notices that complement each other well. The house brochure mentions 42 free parking spaces, including two disabled parking spaces. However, the current service page points out that parking spaces are only available in limited numbers. This leads to a clear recommendation for visitors: Those who rely on a parking space should not wait until the last minute and should check alternatives if in doubt. Especially during large events or simultaneous seminars, occupancy can increase. In practice, this means: Arrive early, pay attention to the signage, and set the address correctly in the navigation system. The Lichthof is therefore not a place for spontaneous parking searches, but for well-planned arrivals. This again fits the character of the house as a professional conference and training center. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/fileadmin/Home/Service/Lichthof/Dokumente/hausbroschuere-lichthof-blb-nrw.pdf))
Seminar Rooms, Foyer, and Capacity
Those looking for the Lichthof often mean not just a building, but a functional conference location with a historical stage. The centerpiece is the namesake courtyard, which according to BLB NRW offers space for large events with up to 180 participants. The room feels open and special due to the glass roof and steel roof construction, even though it is located in an old industrial building. This contrast is a unique selling point: The Lichthof combines the spaciousness of a representative interior with the tranquility of an environment focused on learning and exchange. This is attractive for organizers because large groups are not accommodated in a sterile conference building, but in a house with a clear identity and atmosphere. At the same time, the use remains very practical, as the courtyard is not only beautiful but also designed for larger formats. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
The actual conference rooms are also a strong argument for the location. According to the official description, the house has ten modernly furnished seminar rooms that can be used for presentations, workshops, and training sessions with groups of about 10 to 70 people. The rooms are bright, quiet, and flexible in terms of furniture; requests for seating arrangements are accommodated whenever possible. Standard equipment includes presentation technology, flipcharts, pinboards, and a moderator's case. The house brochure adds that the rooms range from 29 to 225 square meters in size, thus adapting to various formats. Additionally, small group rooms are available for smaller groups. This is particularly interesting for organizations that need multiple work strands in parallel or wish to work in breakout sessions. The Lichthof is thus not only a place for grand speeches but also for focused small group learning. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
Another practical plus is the two fully equipped PC training rooms, each with nine to twelve places. This equipment shows that the Lichthof is not limited to a single form of conference but is also well-prepared for digital training, software training, or administratively oriented further education. In addition, the gastronomic offer during the event: The BLB NRW site describes four menus daily, one of which is vegetarian, each with a starter and dessert, as well as the possibility to accommodate special requests. For breaks, the terrace, the foyer with standing and seating areas, and a lounge for coffee, tea, or soft drinks are also available in summer. This creates an environment where professional work and relaxation are not separated but meaningfully combined. This is exactly what makes the location so attractive for multi-day events. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
Staying at the Conference Hotel Lichthof
The name conference hotel is to be taken literally at the Lichthof, as overnight stays are explicitly part of the concept. The official BLB NRW site mentions 53 hotel rooms and free Wi-Fi, while the house brochure is even more specific: 48 single rooms and five double rooms, plus two accessible rooms. All rooms are non-smoking and equipped with a shower, toilet, hairdryer, telephone, as well as TV and radio. For guests staying several days, this is a clear advantage, as seminar, sleep, and organizational processes come together in one place. Those who want to start early in the morning, stay directly in the house for lunch, and find peace in the evening without additional transfers will find a particularly practical solution here. Especially for training sessions with a tight schedule, this form of accommodation is often more pleasant than an external hotel with additional travel time. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/fileadmin/Home/Service/Lichthof/Dokumente/hausbroschuere-lichthof-blb-nrw.pdf))
The atmosphere of the house is also designed for pleasant work and staying. The official description speaks of modernly equipped seminar and training rooms, an inviting foyer, and a lounge for drinks. The house brochure additionally mentions an in-house restaurant with a terrace and an in-house pub, which makes the stay more lively, especially on long days. For guests who want to sit together for a short time after intense sessions or continue talking informally, this is a real added value. Those who prefer to actively unwind in the evening also find options: The brochure mentions bicycles, table tennis, a bowling alley, and a kicker. This shows that the Lichthof thinks not only functionally but also plans for the social and regenerative part of a conference. This is particularly suitable for teams that want to develop content during the day and come together casually in the evening. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
The location in the heart of the Ruhr area reinforces this impression. The house brochure describes the Lichthof as a place in the heart of the Route of Industrial Culture with cycling and hiking trails. For guests arriving with colleagues, this opens up short break paths and interesting excursion options. The official brochure also mentions a free bicycle offer for individuals and groups of up to ten participants. This is not a luxury detail but a clever addition for guests looking for some movement between two program points. In summary, this creates a conference hotel that not only provides beds and rooms but thinks about the entire stay. This is precisely why the Lichthof is so well suited for professional events, workshops, training sessions, and longer stays. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/fileadmin/Home/Service/Lichthof/Dokumente/hausbroschuere-lichthof-blb-nrw.pdf))
History from the Rheinelbe Colliery to the Conference Hotel
The special effect of the Lichthof begins with its past. The building is the former machine house of the Rheinelbe colliery, which began operations in 1861. Later, the merged Rheinelbe-Alma colliery was temporarily the largest in the Ruhr area, even though mining was already stopped in 1928. Thus, the location exemplifies the industrial development of the Ruhr area: economic upturn, hard work, structural change, and new use. Therefore, those who enter the Lichthof today experience not only a functional event venue but also a piece of industrial history that has been transformed into a new era. This historical depth is a central part of its unique selling point and explains why the Lichthof receives attention far beyond its mere conference function. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
After its time as a machine house, the building served as a wage hall in the 1950s. In 1993, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia purchased the building, followed by a well-planned three-year renovation into a training facility for the then Ministry of Construction and Housing. On January 31, 1997, the building was officially opened as the Lichthof. Since 2001, it has been owned and operated by BLB NRW. This development is remarkable because it shows how gently a historic industrial site can be transformed into a modern educational and conference facility without losing its origins. The name Lichthof is not chosen by chance: The open courtyard with its glass roof makes the former industrial structure spatially tangible. Thus, history is not only told but also made architecturally visible. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
Today, the Lichthof is the training facility of BLB NRW and is visited by about 15,000 guests annually. According to the official site, the facility is not only available to internal users but also to other state authorities and public institutions. This makes the Lichthof a good example of a dual identity: on the one hand, an in-house competence center, and on the other hand, an open place for conferences and training with a public character. This mix of institutional function and historical aura makes the house interesting for search queries such as conference hotel, training facility, Rheinelbe colliery, or Lichthof Gelsenkirchen. Those looking for a place with substance will find more than just an address for seminars here. They find a building that translates the history of the Ruhr area into the everyday life of modern events. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
Images, Special Features, and Relevant Search Intentions
When searching for images of BLB NRW Conference Hotel Lichthof Gelsenkirchen, it is usually about checking the first impression: How does the building look from the outside, how open is the courtyard, how modern are the rooms? This is exactly where the official pages of BLB NRW help, as they show several exterior and interior views. The imagery underscores what the facts already suggest: The Lichthof thrives on the contrast between old brick construction and bright, functional interiors. So those looking for images do not get an interchangeable hotel standard but a visual story of industrial culture and education. For SEO logic, this is important because images, architecture, and atmosphere are among the strongest anchor terms when people get to know the Lichthof for the first time. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
The search intention for reviews is somewhat different. The BLB NRW pages do not collect a classic review site but provide very concrete orientation data: location, room sizes, overnight stays, parking, arrival, and gastronomic information. For many users, this mix of facts is enough to form a realistic picture. This is precisely why the Lichthof is so relevant for informative search queries: People do not just want to see stars but understand whether the place fits their occasion. Whether seminar, training, team day, or longer internal event, the house is designed for planable processes. Those looking for reviews often seek reliability, and this reliability is clearly shown by the official information. ([blb.nrw.de](https://www.blb.nrw.de/service/lichthof))
The surrounding area is also a plus for longer stays. The house brochure refers to attractions such as the Veltins-Arena, the Zoom Erlebniswelt, the Bottrop Ski Hall, the Zollverein colliery, the Gelsenkirchen Music Theater, and other destinations in the Ruhr area. This shows: The Lichthof is not isolated but located in an environment that connects work and short breaks well. For conferences that consciously seek a location with character, this is a strong advantage. The combination of industrial architecture, central location, available rooms, seminar spaces, and historical identity makes the Lichthof a location suitable for both sober professional events and high-quality staged events. This is precisely why the location fits so well with search terms such as directions, parking, seminar rooms, overnight stays, images, and reviews.
Very suitable and practical for seminars and conferences. Don’t expect luxury, which I think isn’t necessary anyway. The food was good, the room was large and clean. The evening in the cellar was also very nice. I didn’t expect more and I’m already looking forward to another visit.

Very good seminar hotel. The rooms are tidy and clean. The food is excellent! There are many opportunities for walks around thanks to the parks. Free parking is available nearby.

I think it’s a good conference venue! Rooms are clean (though my bed linen had stains). I don’t understand the gap at the bottom of the shower cabin. The beds are way too narrow for me. Food is top-notch! I can’t say anything negative about that. The location for after-work is also very good! There was also plenty of parking available at this time.
