During the tour, visitors will witness one of the last large steam-powered hoisting machines in action and learn how technology, mining, and everyday life underground were interconnected.
285 Tons of History in Motion
The colossal hoisting machine from 1963 impresses with its dimensions: Two massive cylinders produced a power of 4100 horsepower. Weighing 285 tons, it is equivalent to the weight of about 200 average passenger cars. It once lifted loads of up to 12 tons at a speed of 18 meters per second, around 65 kilometers per hour.
An Authentic Glimpse into the World of Mining
The machine transported coal from deep underground, safely brought miners down and back, and transported machines, equipment, and waste rock. The tour vividly illustrates this industrial past and imparts local history where it happened: in the historic machine house of the Consolidation mine.
