Places of Remembrance: A special guided tour of the Gelsenkirchen Main Cemetery

On All Saints' Day, the Association for Local and Regional History e. V., GE-Buer, invites you to a reflective tour of the Main Cemetery in Gelsenkirchen. The tour connects local history, cemetery culture, and personal memories to create an impressive discovery experience away from traditional city tours.

History and Significance of a Special Place

Under the guidance of Maria Hoffmann-Herz, horticultural technician specializing in cemeteries, participants will explore various places of remembrance. The Main Cemetery is experienced as a historical, cultural, and simultaneously vibrant part of city history.

The tour provides insights into the development of cemetery culture and highlights graves whose stories are closely linked to Gelsenkirchen and its residents. Between paths, trees, and quiet burial fields, an authentic atmosphere of reflection emerges.

Stations Between Remembrance and City History

Stopovers include the family grave site of respected deceased individuals from the city of Gelsenkirchen. Other stops lead to the graves of deceased children, to a memorial site for the atrocities during the National Socialist era, as well as to the graves of the unburied deceased.

At each station, the group takes time for conversations, personal experiences, and historical contexts. Thus, the city tour becomes a cultural enrichment, where history is not abstract, but becomes visible and directly experienceable at specific locations.

Reflective Discovery Experience in Autumn

The quiet season lends a special atmosphere to the tour. Autumnal paths, developed cemetery landscapes, and the architecture of the mourning hall create the framework for a tour that imparts knowledge while also allowing space for reflection.

Since the individual stations are somewhat further apart, sturdy footwear is recommended. The start and finish are located on the forecourt in front of the mourning hall at Ortbeckstraße 2.

Conclusion: Discover Local History with Respect

This tour presents the Main Cemetery as a place of cultural heritage, remembrance, and local history. Those who wish to experience Gelsenkirchen from a quieter, more human, and historically profound perspective will find an extraordinary city tour here. Participation is free of charge thanks to the volunteer effort.
