Write your own story: Rasha Khayat invites you to the Homestory workshop
On November 10, 2026, the irgendDorf in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf will become an open laboratory for young literature. In this free Homestory writing workshop, the writer and translator Rasha Khayat will guide young people in developing ideas, sharpening language, and giving their own stories a distinctive form.
When a question becomes a text
What should I write about? Where does inspiration begin? And how does a personal experience find its way into a literary scene? The writing workshop takes these questions seriously and transforms them into productive impulses. The focus is on creative writing, exchanging ideas with other young writers, and encouraging trust in one's own voice.
Literary craft meets personal experience
Rasha Khayat combines her experience as an author, translator, and lecturer with a sensitive perspective on themes such as belonging, origin, and the question of what home means. Her novels Because We Are Already Somewhere Else and I Am Not Coming Back show how closely private memory, societal discourse, and literary language art are intertwined.
The workshop is not about a rigid right or wrong. Participants write on-site, discuss the texts created, and receive impulses from the practice of literary writing. This creates a concentrated reading atmosphere where thoughts can be tested, discarded, and further developed.
The Ruhr Area as a literary resonance space
Rasha Khayat was born in Dortmund and repeatedly engages with the Ruhr Area and its biographical landscapes in her texts. Her literary perspective connects regional roots with questions of identity, multiple belonging, and the feeling of being at home somewhere.
The Homestory writing workshop is linked to the eponymous youth writing competition of the city of Gelsenkirchen. The theme of the 2026 edition is Blueprint(s): stories, reports, poems, or song lyrics about future visions, personal visions, and ideas for one's own life or society are sought.
A safe space for young voices
The irgendDorf sees itself as a space for artistic research, free development, and collaborative learning. This open atmosphere creates ideal conditions for a meeting of authors, where literary quality arises not from performance pressure, but from curiosity, courage, and the exchange about language.
Participation is aimed at young people and young adults living in Gelsenkirchen aged between 16 and 24 years. Registration is required. Participation in the writing workshop is possible regardless of submitting a text for the competition.
Conclusion: Four hours for new ideas and your own words
If you are interested in creative writing, literary experiments, and an inspiring encounter with Rasha Khayat, you will find a special place for your own voice on November 10 at irgendDorf. The workshop offers time, practical impulses, and the courage to let thoughts evolve into stories.
