Bring your own stories to life with Nora Schramm

How does an observation turn into a scene, a thought into a narrative, and a blank page into your own literary voice? In the free Homestory writing workshop on October 20, 2026, Nora Schramm invites young people from Gelsenkirchen to discover and develop their skills in creative writing.

Writing as an encounter with your own voice

The four-hour writing workshop is aimed at young people aged 16 to 24. In a small group, texts will be created, ideas exchanged, and writing processes reflected upon together. Inspiration, feedback, and practical tips combine to create an intense literary experience that encourages personal expression.

Nora Schramm: award-winning author and Writer in Residence

Nora Schramm was born in 1993 in the South Palatinate and studied foreign languages and cultural studies in Giessen as well as theories and practices of professional writing in Cologne. Her debut novel Hollow Spaces was published in 2024 by Matthes & Seitz Berlin and was awarded the Kranichsteiner Literature Promotion Prize and the Mara-Cassens Prize. In 2026, the long poem the extinguishing followed at the Parasitenpresse. During her residency in Gelsenkirchen, Schramm is working on her second novel and brings her experience from numerous writing workshops into the author encounter.

Literary impulses around Blueprint(s)

The workshop accompanies the youth writing competition Homestory: Blueprint(s). Short stories, poems, song lyrics, or reports are sought. The theme opens up a wide narrative field: from futuristic designs and science fiction to blue everyday pauses to personal thoughts, urban observations, and entirely unique literary perspectives.

Whether invented or experienced, related to Gelsenkirchen or independent of the location: What matters is the desire to use language as a tool for perception and creation. The writing workshop does not convey a rigid writing method but strengthens the willingness to experiment, linguistic craftsmanship, and trust in one's own literary voice.

Part of Gelsenkirchen's youth promotion

Participation in the writing workshop is independent of submitting a competition text. Those wishing to participate in the competition can submit contributions until January 10, 2027. Selected texts will be awarded in spring 2027 and published in a book that will then be available for loan in the city libraries.

Conclusion: An afternoon for ideas, language, and new perspectives

The Homestory writing workshop combines professional writing practice, an open atmosphere, and cultural participation. Young people have space to try out texts, engage in conversation through language, and discover their own narrative power. Those who want to experience writing not just as a school assignment but as an opportunity for self-communication and shaping the world will find an inspiring place in the cultural space flora.
