Between Sea, Light, and Memory: Peter Starcke's Lighthouses in Gelsenkirchen

With the opening Lighthouse and Seascape Paintings by Peter Starcke, the Atelier Art in the City will open a quiet, poetic image space on October 31, 2026. The exhibition is dedicated to the figurative painting of an artist whose photorealistic landscapes, houses, streets, and faces are characterized by precise observation and human warmth.

Photorealistic Painting with a Poetic Perspective

Peter Starcke works with charcoal, pastels, oil, water, and casein paints. In addition, he uses graphic techniques such as linocut, woodcut, and etching. His works combine craftsmanship precision with a cheerful, never arbitrary view of the world. In the lighthouse and seascape paintings, clear forms, open horizons, and the special lighting effects of maritime landscapes come together.

An Artist Between Technique and Aesthetic Experience

The artist, born in Erfurt in 1949 and currently living in Bochum, studied business administration and computer science and worked, among other things, at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics in Dortmund. His artistic development received important impulses from his art teacher Kuno Gonschior. Since 1982, Starcke has regularly participated in solo and group exhibitions.

The appeal of his painting lies precisely in this combination of analytical accuracy and sensory contemplation of the work. The exhibition atmosphere arises from the tension between real landscapes and inner images: lighthouses appear as points of orientation, while sea, sky, and coastal areas open up expanses and reflection.

Lighthouses as Symbols of Orientation

The lighthouse motifs also shape the artist's annually published calendars. For several years, Peter Starcke has been committed to the Mobile Children and Youth Hospice Service in Bochum. The calendars will be available on the day of the exhibition; half of the sales proceeds will be donated by the artist to the service to support seriously ill children and their families.

Opening at Atelier Art in the City

The exhibition opening will take place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Atelier Art in the City at Von-der-Recke-Straße 1 in Gelsenkirchen. The regular opening hours of the atelier are Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and by appointment.

The exhibition offers a concentrated art experience for all those interested in figurative painting, maritime imagery, and the quiet power of precise observation. Those who want to experience the effect of color, form, light, and space directly should view Peter Starcke's lighthouse and seascape paintings live.
