Fixing The Boat: An Escape Room as a Path to Identity
In the cultural space “die flora” in Gelsenkirchen, a mysterious boat becomes the setting for a special artistic experience: The mobile Escape Room Game by SABRA combines excitement, teamwork, and political education with the exploration of Jewish life and Jewish identities.
Amidst Storms, Puzzles, and Perspective Shifts
The participants enter an immersive installation, where the narrative situation immediately calls for collaboration. A damaged boat drifts in the middle of the sea. Within an hour, the group must solve crucial puzzles and repair the boat before a storm brews. The scenic design creates a focused exhibition atmosphere in which action, spatial effect, and collective thinking intersect.
Cultural Education Transformed into an Artistic Experience
“Fixing The Boat - Finding Identity” perceives the Escape Room as an interactive form of communication. Young people aged 16 and older, along with adults, engage playfully with Jewish life worlds, change perspectives, and then reflect on their experiences. The aesthetic experience arises not only from materials and spatial design but also through the active involvement of each group member.
Discover Together, Reflect Together
Each session accommodates four to six participants. The actual game lasts about an hour; including introduction and subsequent reflection, a duration of at least two hours is anticipated. On Fridays, the offering is also open to small groups. A responsible adult is required for minors. School groups can book appointments by arrangement.
An Educational Offer with Social Relevance
As a mobile project by SABRA, the Escape Room brings political education out of the classroom into a sensibly experiential play situation. The curation focuses on perspective shifts, cooperation, and debriefing. Thus, the viewing of the work broadly engages with identity, belonging, and the diversity of Jewish life.
Conclusion: An Exhibition that Invites Action
Visitors can expect not a passive exhibition format, but a concentrated, communal artistic experience filled with excitement and lasting thought-provoking insights. Those wishing to combine cultural education, interactive installation, and political reflection should experience “Fixing The Boat - Finding Identity” live at the cultural space “die flora.” Registration is required.
