Rhythm, Energy, and Joy of Life: Experience the Djembe Live
On Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Gelsenkirchen Education Center invites you to an exciting workshop about West African drumming. From 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, beginners and experienced drummers will discover the sonorous world of the Djembe and experience how individual beats create a common pulse.
When the First Beat Fills the Room
The Djembe combines deep bass sounds with clear, bright accents. Its direct sound is physical and immediate: hands, skin, and space enter into a lively dialogue. In the group, a rhythmic synchronization grows from different tonal colors, connecting concentration, movement, and joy of life.
Discover Traditional Rhythms Together
The focus is on traditional West African rhythms and attentive interplay. Participants will get to know the Djembe, develop a sense of timing, and learn how crucial dynamics, repetition, and mutual listening are for powerful orchestration. Playing together makes musical structures immediately tangible.
For Beginners and Experienced Drummers
The workshop is explicitly aimed at interested individuals with or without drumming experience. Instruments will be provided. An additional rental fee of 5.00 euros for the Djembe will be charged on-site to the instructor, alongside the participation fee.
Experience from Traditional African Culture
The workshop will be led by Hans Joachim Klein, a musician with over 30 years of drumming experience in traditional African culture. As the leader of the Circulo Tambores drumming school and a member of the drum group Mama Limbo, he combines long-standing practice with an understandable, community-oriented teaching approach.
A Concert Experience to Participate In
The audience is not kept at a distance here. Every beat contributes to the overall performance, as the live atmosphere develops from changing rhythms, growing audience mood, and focused interplay. The conducting emerges from listening together, reacting, and passing on the pulse.
Conclusion: The Djembe workshop promises two and a half hours full of rhythm, encounter, and African joy of life. Those who want to experience West African drumming not just by hearing but also by participating will find the right place at the Gelsenkirchen Education Center. Registration is required at 0209 169-2508.
