Rhythm, Energy, and Joy of Life: West African Drumming in Gelsenkirchen
On October 10, 2026, the Gelsenkirchen Education Center will transform into a vibrant sound space: The workshop West African Drumming – Energy and Joy of Life with the Djembe invites beginners and experienced drumming enthusiasts to discover traditional rhythms together.
When the first beat fills the room
The Djembe is the focus of this intense musical experience. Its distinctive sound combines deep bass with clear, bright strokes and creates a special pull effect within the group. Step by step, a shared pulse emerges from individual impulses – direct, physical, and full of movement.
Experience traditional rhythms together
Under expert guidance, participants will learn the basics of West African drumming. The focus is on traditional rhythms, rhythmic synchronization, and attentive interplay within the group. It is not only about technique but also about communication, concentration, and the joy of making music together.
For beginners and advanced
The workshop is aimed at interested individuals with or without drumming experience. The instruments will be provided on-site. In addition to the participation fee, a rental fee of 5 Euros for the Djembe will be charged, which is to be paid directly to the course leader.
Experience from traditional African culture
The workshop is led by Hans Joachim Klein, a musician with more than 30 years of experience in drumming within traditional African culture. As the leader of the drumming school Circulo Tambores and a member of the drum group Mama Limbo, he combines musical expertise with practical teaching. Circulo Tambores is dedicated to West African Djembe, Dundun, and rhythm traditions from Guinea, Mali, and Senegal.
A concert experience to participate in
The audience does not remain at a distance: Every beat contributes to the overall performance. The live atmosphere arises directly from the shared playing, from changing sound colors and the growing audience mood in the room. Those who engage with the rhythm experience music as physical movement, social connection, and creative energy.
Conclusion: The workshop promises two and a half hours full of rhythm, encounters, and joy of life. Those who want to not only hear but also experience West African drumming will find the right place at the Gelsenkirchen Education Center. Registration is required at 0209 169-2508.
