Gojo & Mattner bring Nucleus to Gelsenkirchen
On November 8, 2026, the werkstatt in Gelsenkirchen will transform into a laboratory for contemporary jazz, improvised music, and electronic sound colors. Filippa Gojo and Stephan Mattner will present their duo project Nucleus at 7:30 PM as a CD release concert.
Voice and soprano saxophone in dialogue
Nucleus seeks the essence, the musical core behind melody, rhythm, and sound. Filippa Gojo's voice meets Stephan Mattner's soprano saxophone. Both levels respond immediately to each other, shift their roles, and develop a lively stage performance between concentration and sonic openness.
Acoustic meets electronics
The reduced instrumentation receives a multifaceted orchestration through Kaoss Pad, keyboards, computer sounds, and intentionally applied effects. Sometimes, voice and saxophone emerge clearly; at other times, acoustic and electronic merge into a floating sound surface. The synchronization of the instruments arises not from fixed patterns but from attentive listening and spontaneous reaction.
Two outstanding voices of the German jazz scene
Filippa Gojo studied jazz singing in Cologne and Amsterdam, worked with renowned ensembles like the WDR Big Band, and received the Horst and Gretl Will Scholarship from the city of Cologne in 2014. In 2015, she won the band prize of the New German Jazz Prize with her quartet, as well as the soloist prize. Since 2023, she has been teaching as a professor of jazz and pop singing at the University of Music in Nuremberg.
Stephan Mattner studied classical saxophone, instrumental pedagogy, and jazz saxophone. He played in various ensembles and on international stages, was a guest of the WDR Big Band and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, and reached the semifinals of the International Saxophone Competition at the Montreux International Jazz Festival. Radio productions for WDR, MDR, BR, and Deutschlandfunk document his diverse musical activities.
A concert experience for curious ears
The audience can expect not a rigid sound architecture but a concert in constant movement. Fine breath sounds, precise soprano saxophone lines, electronic impulses, and open improvisational spaces create an intense live atmosphere. Nucleus focuses on intermediate tones and makes audible how new musical spaces arise from reduction.
Conclusion: Jazz as immediate sound exploration
Gojo & Mattner invite you to an extraordinary concert experience that closely connects voice, soprano saxophone, and electronics. Anyone wishing to experience contemporary jazz, free improvisation, and unusual sound concepts live should not miss this CD release concert at the werkstatt.
